Camping in Alamo

This past weekend Rachel and I went camping in Alamo, NV. Never heard of it? We hadn't either. Alamo is a small town with 2500 people. It is located about 1.5 hours north of Las Vegas. We brought our tent and sleeping bags and slept by a lake just south of the town. You would never believe how green Alamo really is until you go there. It is completely surrounded by desert but has 2 lakes and lots of trees.

Alamo is also located very close to area 51. Some of the locals told us "UFO stories" and bright lights in the sky. We visited Highway (?) which is called UFO highway. We also found out that the nearby town of "Rachel" is the home of UFO sightings. Is it a coincidence that my wife is named Rachel? I hope so!

While camping we were attacked by a swarm of bugs. There were so many bugs hitting our tent at one point it sounded like it was raining. Luckily we were able to avoid the bugs the second night by staying the night at a friends house. We also visited a really nice Hot Springs just a few miles away from the town. It is an oasis that is apparently very well known, among the hispanic population. We were definitely the minority swimming in those hot springs.

Alamo is a small tightknit community. They had a parade and a carnival all day on the 4th. They served breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the entire town! The best part of the trip was the home run hitting contest. For $5, you get the chance to hit as many home runs out of a little league park using little league bats and against a FAST pitching machine. I was able to crank out 7 home runs missing the championship round by one home run.

This reminded me of the movie, The Sandlot. As we played baseball, fireworks were going off in the background and the song "America the Beautiful" was playing.

We enjoyed watching the fireworks shoot off and were waiting for the finale. We asked the people next to us if there was a finale and they told us they have "ground finales!" After 10 minutes of setting up probably a thousand fireworks in front us, they lit the fuse and BOOM! fireworks shot in every direction lighting up the entire park. As they exploded, all of the debris landed on the crowd, black pellets and cardboard pelted everyone. No one could look up to see the fireworks as they were hit with a final barrage. It was a really unique finale indeed!

It was a great weekend and we look forward to visiting Alamo again.---Casey

Hey Casey,
Mom talked with Susan Hansen and guess where they were on the 4th? Yep...Good ol' Alamo. Right there in the same city as you guys were. How funny is that? They were at a family reunion and ended up watching fireworks in Alamo, NV.
