Brooklyn's Surgery

Today was Brooky's surgery for her hip dysplasia. She was having a closed reduction for her left hip. We woke up at 4:30am and left for the hospital a little after 5:00. We checked in at the hospital at 6:00am. She stayed awake the whole way, which I thought she would go immediately back to sleep once we got her in the car. She was happy as could be the whole time in the car and waiting to check in. After checking in they took us back and she got dressed in her hospital clothes. The pants and socks they gave us were way too big and kept falling off her. Go figure. Then the anesthesiologist came and got information and went over everything on that end with us and then her doctor came in and we asked him all of our questions. Then once everything was ready to go (7:30) the anesthesiologist took her away from me after promising me she was in good hands and they would take good care of her, I reluctantly let her go and they whisked her away on her cart/bed back to surgery. So we went down to the cafeteria and got breakfast while she was in surgery and tried to keep our minds off of it. Casey did payroll while I read the Ensign. then we just waited for the doctor to give us a call informing us how it went. I got a call at 8:30 from the doctor saying that everything had gone smoothly and as planned and that she only had to have the closed reduction! YAY! So she didn't have to have the incision!

Surgery Procedure: They gave her bubblegum flavored gas to knock her out. Then they gave her an IV with the different meds and electrolites and things that she needed through it. Once she was all drugged up they inserted the needle with dye and did the Anthrogram. It showed that everything looked good so no open reduction needed at this time. Then after manually "shoving" her hip deep into the socket and making sure it was in the correct position they casted her up in a full body cast AKA Spika cast.

So from 8:30 after we talked to our doctor we just had to wait for them to finish casting her up. We went back upstairs from the cafeteria at 9:00. They were ready for us just a few minutes after we got back up to the waiting room. Perfect timing. So we both got to back and see her. She was just coming out of anesthesia. I was the only one who got to stay with her in there, so Casey had to go back out and wait in the waiting room after seeing her. I held her for the next hour as she came out of the anesthesia. She was groggy and irritable. But not too bad. After she came to a bit more we gave her glucose water in a bottle. Since she kept that down good she got to have formula. By 10:00. She was ready to go to Check out. Once we got there we were there for two more hours waiting around for them to try and figure out our car seat situation and have the doctor release us. We were finally able to leave the hospital at 12:30.

All in all she has been doing really well so far. She sounds really horse like a seal. Especially when she cries. I fell so bad for her! She is SUPER HEAVY! Her cast is made of plaster and fiberglass. I haven't weighed her in it yet, but I am guessing it added a good 10 lbs! And now she is so thick it is extremely hard to get a good grip on her to pick her up and the extra weight doesn't help. It is really awkward trying to hold her right now but hopefully that will get easier with a little practice. Also the diapering thing is crazy because of the bar that is in place for extra stability. I haven't figured out how to get her comfortable when flipping her onto her tummy! Poor baby. We will get through this though and so far she is handling it like a champ although I can tell she is irritable.

She is sleeping right now and hope she will still sleep as good once all the meds. and anesthesia are completely out of her system. She is my sweet little, or should I say big Spika girl!  And I love her more than ever!

As for me I am holding up fine. I am really tired from not getting enough rest last night, but emotionally have been keeping it together much better than I thought I would. Probably has something to do with all the prayers and thoughts that have been coming our way. That and the fact that I have already cried so much the past week that I have gotten a good share out of my system already. This is hard, but we will get through it with the great family and friends we have supporting us! Thank you so much everyone! Stay tuned for more pictures and updates to come.

A little after 6 am just waiting to check in.

She was happy as could be. Especially for waking up so early!

Getting ready to take off her pretty PJ's that she won't be able to wear anymore.

Last picture of her in her brace. (Worn from Sept 1, 2011 to May 9, 2012)
That includes the smaller size one she was in before this one. So that is from 5 weeks old to 9 1/2 months!

Here she is all changed in the pants that are clearly way too big! Didn't even stay on at all.

I told you she was happy as could be! Love this smile!

I am going to miss her being able to sit up on her own! :(

First seeing her just out of surgery.

Picture with our babe

Feeling how heavy she is for the first time! WOW! I'm sure she weighs more than Zaya now!

Trying to wake up but still so sleepy.

Awake enough to have some glucose water.

Reading her a story.

So glad to have that part over with! Now just on to figuring out life again with a heavy baby in a BIG spica cast! Our Hippo car seat should be here in about a week or two and we need to order her a special chair to sit in from http://www.ivyrosespicachairs.com/. I think those will both make all the difference! We need to find out some sort of wagon or stroller that will work well for her too. Until then we will be pretty much stuck at home. One day part way down 6 months or so to go...

So great to hear it went well. Now we will keep praying that things will keep going smoothly for you and that her hips will heal up. Lucy is not forgeting you, nor is she letting us. :)

That just breaks my heart! I am truly sorry :( It is a hard thing to watch your baby go through. You have my empathy!
And good call on getting an Ivy Rose--check on the Hip Dysplasia kids board on Babycenter, sometimes there are people on there passing them on to other HD kids.
Also, try putting her on a bean bag chair for playtime and just to get her off the ground. Good luck finding a stroller! That can be tough!
Thinking of you guys!
